Former New York Yankees pitcher C.C. Sabathia watching former teammate's postseason run closely

Former New York Yankees pitcher C.C. Sabathia, walks onto the field to throw out the first pitch before Game 1 of an American League Division baseball series between the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Guardians, Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2022, in New York. Montgomery is slated to start Game 5 of the the American League Championship Series against the Astros Friday, and according to a

“It’s stressful watching him, man, because I’m living and dying with every pitch,” Sabathia told NYDN. “He’s just been stone-cold, a straight-face killer out there. He’s been fun to watch, but it’s been stressful for me just because I want him to do so well.” Sabathia, who retired after the 2019 season, bonded with the fellow southpaw, serving as a mentor when he joined the Yankees in 2017.

The Yankees traded Montgomery to the Cardinals in the summer of 2022 in exchange for center fielder Harrison Bader. Texas acquired Montgomery from St. Louis in late July. In 11 regular season starts with the Rangers, he’s recorded a 2.79 ERA. So far this postseason, he’s had three starts and a 2.08 ERA in 17.1 innings.

“I think I was more distraught over him getting traded from New York than kind of he was,” Sabathia told NYDN. “I was upset about that. But just watching the way he’s responded, learning in St. Louis and then being able to come to Texas and pitch the way he’s pitched, it’s been great to see him kind of grow up. It’s like watching a little brother grow up.
