Yankees reliever Jonathan Loáisiga is out for the rest of the year with another elbow injury, his fifth arm-related injury in the last four years.
Boone isn’t exaggerating. Since 2019, Loáisiga has dealt with five different arm-related injuries: three right shoulder strains and two IL stints that started with elbow inflammation. That’s a major red flag for a pitcher that has one more year of team control. Loáisiga even dealt with arm issues as a prospect, undergoing Tommy John surgery seven years ago.
The belief, as of now, is that this injury isn’t a big deal. Boone doesn’t think that it has anything to do with the bone spur that forced Loáisiga to miss four months earlier this year. The skipper said the Yankees want to be cautious, that’s why they’re shutting him down and sending him back to New York for further testing.
Boone isn’t embellishing when he says Loáisiga is one of the best relievers in the game when healthy and rolling either. Two years ago, Loáisiga posted a 2.17 ERA over 57 outings, the best campaign of his career. Before getting roughed up by the Brewers over this past weekend — which probably had something to do with the state of the reliever’s elbow — Loáisiga had thrown 12 2/3 scoreless innings in a row since coming off the 60-day injured list, recapturing that dominant form.
