Xplore Mobile shut down signal for government to ‘stop approving telecom mergers’ cdnpoli

In a statement on its website, Xplore Mobile put the blame on the CRTC for taking too long to implement a framework for mobile virtual network operators to buy wholesale access to the networks of wireless incumbents. The CRTC has said Bell, Rogers, Telus and SaskTel must, for seven years, sell wholesale access to regional players who already have telecom infrastructure, allowing those regional companies to offer wireless service outside their existing operating areas.

Xplore Mobile was never an effective competitor in the market. In an interview this spring, following reports that Xplornet would be taking over Freedom Mobile, Klass argued “no economically rational actor would sign up for their service.” “If it had been structured more aggressively, so that Xplornet got even more of the spectrum and even more customers and more advantages, perhaps they would have been able to compete, or perhaps they would have been able to hang on longer.”

The announcement comes as Canadians could see an even bigger merger, with Rogers attempting to buy Shaw, which would give Rogers a footprint in Western Canada. Shaw operates Freedom Mobile, the fourth carrier in Ontario, B.C. and Alberta, which has been credited with driving down prices in those provinces.
