There have also been calls to overhaul the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act, but the UK Government is resisting the suggestion.
A ban on American Bully XL dogs is looking more likely, as the UK Government said it was close to defining the breed.
However, the government is resisting calls to overhaul the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act. The legislation covers Scotland, England and Wales, with similar rules in Northern Ireland. Currently, the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasileiro are illegal to own in the UK. Labour MP Rosie Duffield chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Dog Advisory Welfare Group. She said animal rescue charities were refusing to accept dogs they think could be Bully XLs, due to the possible ban. She added: “What happens if these XL Bullys, or dogs that are deemed to be XL Bullys, are effectively strays? That’s pretty scary.”
