Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso was installed as the favourite to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield but chose to rule himself out of the process
Bayer Leverkusen manager and Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso is reportedly still as keen to manage his old club again despite recently rejecting their advances.
Alonso has been building a brilliant reputation for himself in management after a stunning campaign with the Bundesliga club. The former midfielder led Leverkusen to the German league title in comfortable fashion and his team are now just three games away from not only completing a treble but also securing the ultimate invincible season.
Such form led the 42-year-old to be heavily linked with the Liverpool job when Jurgen Klopp announced he would be stepping down at the end of the campaign. However, Alonso ruled himself out of the running for that and the Bayern Munich job this time around.According to Abendzeitung, while now is not considered to be the right time for Alonso to move back to Merseyside, he does still remain committed to managing his former clubs Liverpool, Bayern and Real Madrid before he retires from football.
In 2018, during an interview with Guillem Balague for talkSPORT, Alonso said: "Yeah for sure, I have dreamt of that . First I have to prove myself and I have to prepare but if I decide somewhere along the way to take my chances as a manager, my link, my commitment, my passion with Liverpool is there, so why not?
"We will see if we can cross paths in our ways. I think Stevie will go to Liverpool earlier than me, it is the natural way."
