Immortal X-Men 10 has finally explained why the low-powered Angel was selected for the team's original incarnation. As Professor X shares his secrets, he comments that Warren Worthington III was recruited for his wealth, not his powers.

This article contains spoilers for Immortal X-Men #10.Professor X chose his original X-Men with the greatest care - and he's finally revealed why he picked the weakest team member of all. When Charles Xavier chose his original X-Men, he put together a team with tremendous power and potential. He found no less than two Omega-level mutants, defined as beings whose "dominant power is deemed to register - or reach - an undefinable upper limit of that power's specific classification.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Not all the original X-Men were equally powerful, of course. The weakest was undeniably Warren Kenneth Worthington III, aka Angel, who acted as a vigilante before he was approached by Professor X. Angel was undeniably impressive, with his fellow X-Men describing him as like a blond god, and his feathered wings really did make him look almost Biblical.

Angel Was Chosen for His Money Readers have often wondered how Professor X funded his X-Men project. Recent comics have revealed he used his powers to carefully cultivate financial ties across the world, and Angel's inherited fortune must have factored into his plans. It's fascinating to see the strategic focus of Charles Xavier, even at such an early stage of his career as leader of the X-Men.

Angel has since become a powerhouse mutants thanks to Apocalypse implanting the powerful Archangel personality and powers in his body, however this wasn't Xavier's intent when bringing Warren into his inner circle. Instead, he wanted millions to support the mutant cause, as well as Angel's financial expertise - a quality he still draws on to this day, asking Angel to head up X-Corp and be the first line of defense against financial attacks on his new mutant nation.
