Worthington City Council is exploring placing a $1.1-million affordable housing bond package before voters in November.

Columbus officials said that original $50 million leveraged another $276 million in investment and created more than 1,300 housing units.

"I view this proposed program as a significant initiative — a first for a central Ohio inner-ring suburb — and, if approved by the voters, and successful in its implementation, as a landmark first step," Robinson wrote. Robinson said that Columbus' program is the template and has demonstrated that a modest amount of public incentives can make a big difference in attracting affordable housing.

In another memo prepared for the city council, Robinson wrote that Worthington’s $1.1 million could help finance anywhere from two to four projects in the 30-60 unit range each. Robinson has discussed the bond issue with Carlie Boos, executive director of the Affordable Housing Alliance of Central Ohio, who said that affordable housing is needed throughout the region.

"I hope that their leadership becomes an example to other communities throughout the region," Klaben said.
