“When things get going like that on a fire, it gets really difficult.'
Schaaf hopes for some respite with a few days of slightly cooler temperatures on the way, which are forecast to range from the low to mid-90s before they climb up again by next weekend. But a red flag warning for abundant lightning on dry vegetation is in effect through Monday; isolated and scattered thunderstorms are expected sometime in the afternoon or early evening.
“What we would expect is that thunderstorms to the south of the fire might move over the fire, which is dangerous,” Schaaf said. “On Monday, we could see more potential for strong and severe storms in the area, as well with gusty winds up to 60 mph and occasional to abundant lightning.” Lutz noted a chance of seeing “some meaningful rain” increases through Monday evening, which could help slow the fire. He said that half an inch of rain can dampen the potential of fire spread for anywhere from 12 hours to a few days, depending on the subsequent weather conditions. However, thunderstorms also create concerns for new fires due to the high winds and lightning strikes hampering firefighting efforts, so the impact, if any, remains to be seen.
“The weather service is working very closely with firefighting partners to monitor the weather and communicate any dangers as quickly as we can,” Schaaf said.
