Leisure centre, gym and swimming pool running costs represent one particularly challenging area for council finances
Rising energy costs and staff wages, financial uncertainty after the government’s September mini-budget, the Covid pandemic’s impact and short-term government funding decisions are among the factors creating risks for Rossendale Council, councillors have heard.
LEISURE CENTRES & THE WHITAKER MUSEUM Rossendale leisure, arts and museum venues were recovering from lost income from the pandemic lock-downs. But now leisure venues face new challenges from rising costs and uncertainty over council funding from the government, councillors heard. “Senior council officers are attending leisure trust board meetings to ensure we work together to minimise costs and intensive monitoring is in place. Funding through a Covid Sport England Fund has been received, though this is limited. Constant monitoring of future business plans and work in partnership to maximise income and reduce costs continues.”
However, he added: “Ski Rossendale is a big success and making a profit.” There were deficits linked to the Whitaker museum and Whitworth’s swimming pool, where there had been a leak. Costs for gas heating, lighting and air ventilation systems could be expensive. A long-term plan for the leisure trust’s future would be available in November.
“However, the trust have got a plan and they must deliver on the plan. We will work with the leisure trust board and hopefully, in tandem, we will get a good outcome.”
