We’re having a rash of car thefts and in the vast majority of cases, it’s because somebody left the key fob in the car.
A large number of these stolen cars are then used in violent crimes, authorities say. A car left unlocked in somebody’s Union County driveway was used in a fatal shooting in Essex County; so was a car left running outside a Starbucks in a Bergen County suburb.

Not even just fancy cars – a regular old Honda Accord is the car most often stolen. Last year, 14,320 vehicles were reported swiped in New Jersey, a 22% increase compared to 2020, which also saw a rise over the previous year, according to State Police data.
