The botnet, known as “911 S5,” was a crucial tool for facilitating various cybercrimes, including fraud, identity theft, and child exploitation. In a significant blow to cybercrime, an international law enforcement team has arrested a Chinese national and dismantled what is likely to be the “world’s largest” botnet that he allegedly operated for nearly a decade, generating at least $99 million in profits.
“This Justice Department-led operation brought together law enforcement partners from around the globe to disrupt 911 S5, a botnet that facilitated cyber-attacks, large-scale fraud, child exploitation, harassment, bomb threats and export violations,” stated Attorney General Merrick B. Garland in the press release.
According to court documents, about 76 of the servers used were leased from online service providers based in the United States. The botnet infected over 19 million IP addresses across nearly 200 countries, including more than 613,000 in the United States.
