The World Happiness Report 2024 gave Finland, home to 5.5million people, the top spot for the seventh year running, with a score of 7.74 out of 10 whilst Afghanistan was unhappiest nation at 1.72.

Experts also claimed the data showed a worrying trend of younger adults in Europe and North America experiencing the equivalent of a 'mid-life crisis'. Analysts said this was mainly driven by a decline in wellbeing among under-30s, with this year's report the first to have broken down results by age group.

Professor Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, an expert of economics and behavioural science at the University of Oxford and editor of the report said: 'Piecing together the available data on the wellbeing of children and adolescents around the world, we documented disconcerting drops especially in North America and Western Europe.
