Muhsin Hendricks, a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ Muslims, was murdered in a targeted attack, prompting an outpouring of grief and condemnation.
Muhsin Hendricks, a 57-year-old self-proclaimed gay imam from Cape Town, was tragically killed in a targeted attack on Saturday, February 15, 2025, near Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth. Hendricks, widely recognized as the world's first openly gay Muslim imam, was fatally shot while seated in a vehicle. Another car pulled up, blocking their exit, and two masked individuals emerged, firing multiple shots at Hendricks and his companion.
After fleeing the scene, the driver discovered Hendricks had succumbed to his injuries. Hendricks established a mosque in Cape Town as a sanctuary for gay and other marginalized Muslims. He bravely shared his story in a documentary, acknowledging previous threats against him but emphasizing his commitment to authenticity over fear. His death has sparked an outpouring of grief and condemnation on social media. Anwar McKay, Hendricks' husband, expressed his devastation, stating, 'Human rights activist and brave, kind soul. You did not deserve this brutality, this barbarism. May your beautiful soul rest in peace. There is so much hatred in this world today. We as humans will march and fight for the freedom of some human beings but will disregard the sanctity of the life of others. Love is the most powerful force in the universe. In the end, love wins, always.'Many social media users echoed the sentiments of shock and anger, questioning the senseless violence and the lack of humanity displayed. The incident is widely suspected to be a homophobic hate crime, highlighting the continued dangers faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, even within religious communities
