World Food Programme Halves Food Aid for Refugees in Malawi Malawi
in Malawi to cut by one-half food rations for more than 50,000 people at the country's only refugee camp, Dzaleka. Refugees are complaining of inadequate food assistance, a situation that has forced some of them to voluntarily return home.
Earlier this month, 38 refugees from Burundi returned home, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said plans are underway to repatriate another group of more than 50 refugees. WFP in Malawi attributes the shortfall to a number of factors, including the high cost of food both locally and globally.
Dzaleka refugee camp is home to upwards of 50,000 refugees, mainly from the DR Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Somalia.The World Food Program in Malawi says a funding shortfall has forced it to cut by one-half food rations for more than 50,000 people at the country's only refugee camp.

Global Food Systems 'Broken', Says UN Chief"Global food systems are broken - and billions of people are paying the price", according to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, while addressing the UN Food Systems Summit +2 Stocktaking Moment from July 24-26, 2023 in Rome, Italy. According to UN estimates, over 780 million people experience hunger, almost one-third of all food produced globally is lost or wasted and nearly three billion people cannot afford healthy diets. This as developing countries face the additional burdens of high debt and the worst impacts of the climate emergency. With food systems playing a key role in reducing carbon emissions and limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the secretary-general called for food systems that reduce the carbon footprint of food processing, packaging, and transportation.
