Argentina’s Lionel Messi is heading into the 2022 tournament in Qatar looking for the one prize which has eluded him through a storied career.
Argentina heads into the World Cup with its most well-rounded side since 2014, and opens its account Tuesday against Saudi Arabia at the Lusail Iconic Stadium just north of here.
Unlike the two South American icons, however, he has never kissed the World Cup winner’s trophy and likely will not have another opportunity after this tournament. Messi nearly took them to the title in Brazil, of all places, eight years ago, but didn’t get much help and Argentina lost to Germany in the final.
Tim Weah had given the United States a 1-0 lead 36 minutes into the first half, finishing off an excellent pass from Christian Pulisic and flicking the ball past Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey. The goal brought the game to life as both teams were feeling their way through it to that point.
