Davies was still in Germany receiving treatment on a hamstring strain sustained while playing with Bayern Munich.

Davies is en route to meet with the team at its hotel here in Qatar according to head coach John Herdman, but whether he is able to play in the World Cup opener Wednesday against Belgium at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium remains to be seen.

Playing without Davies is not foreign to Canada and Herdman. Davies missed seven of the 20 qualifying games due to injury. He was not available for the World Cup-clinching game in March against Jamaica at BMO Field in Toronto due to developing myocarditis after about with COVID-19. The win against Japan was good for the soul and does give Canada some confidence heading into the World Cup opener.

Belgium went on to beat Brazil in the quarter-final before losing to eventual champion France in the semifinal.“One game at-a-time, that’s been our philosophy for the 20 games that got us here,” Herman said. “Tonight was all about scoring, it was all about a mentality to show that this wasn’t a friendly match, it was us setting the tone going into a World Cup game.

It took 36 years to get to this point, and now the team is less than a week from opening the tournament here in Qatar.
