Wage talks between unions and the employer have collapsed.Transnet said it was struggling financially and instead made a counter-offer of only 1.5%.

Trade union Satawu, which represents 13 500 Transnet employees, says the offer by the employer is insulting under the current economic conditions.“Today, before the end of the day, we are going to send a 48-hour notice to the employer that we will be embarking on a legal and protected strike,” the the union’s spokesperson Amanda Tshemese.

“We have received a letter from the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration to find ways of breaking the deadlock and find common ground between ourselves and the employer.
