The municipality has made a resolution to deal with grief and trauma in the community, and there's already money behind it.
A memorial in Debert, dedicated to Kristen Beaton and her unborn child. Brendyn CreamerTRURO, N.S. — Many residents across Colchester, Cumberland and East Hants counties remain in suffering due to the mass casualty event that claimed 22 lives and an unborn baby on April 18-19, 2020.
“Here we have this money. It is not being used. It is needed in the community,” said Mayor Christine Blair during the council meeting. While she was in the role of the provincial grief lead, Lewis had set out to develop a comprehensive strategy to help those affected by the mass casualty event province-wide; however, when her contract was up, she never heard tell of it again. When asked for comment regarding the lack of a long-term grief and trauma initiative, Nova Scotia Health responded that they are currently looking for a community outreach worker that would be responsible for Central Nova Scotia.
“In Nova Scotia, the research that came out of Swiss Air, for example, when we start to promote rural communities as being stoic and, you think about that hashtag, Nova Scotia Strong... who goes and asks for help?” Lewis said it’s important to have a program that extends to every reach of the community: schools, long-term care facilities and to frontline workers. To ensure a program matches the needs of the community, Lewis has proposed a 'needs assessment' be completed.
“The money is a meager amount compared to what a long-term, sustainable program to support trauma and grief healing in our region,” said Simmonds during the meeting.
