There is a need to do both the immediate work of supporting women to keep them safe, as well as supporting more systemic measures that work towards ending the violence entirely, writes
I once had an emergency, fetched the spare key and did not return it.Then, in 2017, just before I had surgery, there was an evening when I found myself in extreme pain and was on the verge of passing out.
I remember cursing for not returning the key to my friend, because this would have allowed me to leave the kids at home. Although it would be different for each individual, leaving a spare key with a trusted person who could get into your home is essential. But in more extreme situations, such as domestic violence, it could be the difference between a narrow escape from danger and a devastating tragedy. She was being beaten up by a man, whom I assumed was her partner. She had managed to SMS someone she knew for help.
The policeman at the gate told me that his siren and lights were on, so it was known that the police were outside. The only thought that crossed my mind was, “What if the sound of the police angers him so much that he kills her?”She eventually managed to open the gate and the police were able to help.
There is a need to do both the immediate work of supporting women to keep them safe, as well as supporting more systemic measures that work towards ending the violence entirely. So, while I recognise the limitations of individual safety routines, I encourage women to leave a spare key with a trusted person.
