Women turn backs while Trudeau speaks at event following caucus dismissals GlobePolitics

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau listens to a question during the Daughters of the Vote event in the House of Commons as roughly 50 women slowly rose and turned their backs in background as he began to speak.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tried to explain his expulsion of two prominent female MPs from the governing Liberal caucus to young women gathered Wednesday for the Daughters of the Vote program in Ottawa, designed to boost the number of women in politics.

Mr. Trudeau told Daughters of the Vote delegates that members of his government need to trust each other. Mr. Trudeau had broached this topic by telling the hundreds of young women assembled in the House of Commons chamber that he wanted to address the expulsions, or as he termed it, “disagreements within the Liberal Party.”The SNC-Lavalin affair has dominated federal Canadian politics for nearly eight weeks since The Globe and Mail first reported the Prime Minister’s Office put pressure on Ms.

“I need to tell you this is part of what politics needs to be about: hearing different voices, listening, learning from each other, and figuring a path forward,” the Prime Minister said. “Nobody in here wants to have to pick who to believe between Jody Wilson-Raybould and Chrystia Freeland,” Mr. Trudeau said, naming the Foreign Affairs Minister.

Mr. Trudeau has cited last week’s revelation that Ms. Wilson-Raybould secretly recorded a key conversation with Mr. Wernick as “unconscionable” conduct that made it impossible for her to remain in caucus.
