In the 26 years of our democracy, South Africa has made progress in advancing women's rights, in broadening women's access to education, in the provision of healthcare and social support to women, and in improving their participation in the economy. However, we know that at the same time, the lived reality for millions of South African women is very different to the promise contained in our Constitution.
The South African private sector has played a large part in driving transformation and the mining industry has implemented many programmes that promote the advancement of women, however, there is still a long way to go to ensure that women not only have a seat at the table but have a voice.
