The Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaign is working tirelessly for what it describes as 'justice'

No one could imagine working more than 40 years just to be told one year before you were due to retire that you'd need to work for another six.Kathleen had worked in a school setting for more than 40 years and was in full-time employment from the age of 19. At 59, Kathleen started making plans for her retirement. As far as she was aware, the retirement age was 60 and this would mean she would be able to give her full attention to her elderly mother who required care.

"I knew I always wanted to retire at 60, I was 59, my mum was 94 and my dad had passed away a few years before and my mum was diagnosed with dementia. I realised my mum's time was limited so I really wanted to retire at 60. So at 59 I enquired about retirement and let my boss know I was going to go at 60. It was then they mentioned something about the pension age changes."

Kathleen then had to make the decision of whether to carry on working or spend whatever time left she had with her mum. But after mentally preparing herself to retire at 60, Kathleen took the financial hit and stopped working. Kathleen said despite caring for her 99-year-old mother has been hard it was made worse by worrying about money. Luckily, she managed to save throughout the years meaning she hasn't suffered as badly as other women.

The WASPI campaign was formed in 2015 to campaign for fair and fast compensation, with some of the worst affected women only receiving a few months’ notice of a six-year delay to their State Pension. The Parliamentary Ombudsman – the government watchdog – has now been investigating the DWP’s failings for five years, with his first stage report, published two years ago, finding clear maladministration in the DWP’s communication of State Pension age changes.
