The woman’s case, which led to hospitalisation and weeks of recovery, has sparked an outpouring of similar reports from residents and visitors, many of whom have also been treated for gastrointestinal and bacterial infections linked to contaminated sea water. This wave of public concern follows a previous revelation by the citizen-led RethinkTheStink initiative, which exposed widespread contamination along Cape Town’s coastline in late 2024.and Professor Leslie Petrik of the University of the Western Cape, water testing in Table Bay revealed that 42% of sampling dates exceeded safety limits for E. coli and Enterococci during November and December of 2024.
‘Cape Town has serious water pollution issues, as evidenced by its inland water quality reports,’ said Dr. Robertson, pointing to outdated sewage systems and the lack of proper stormwater treatment. He emphasised the need for the City to act more swiftly to address the problem. The debate over water safety has raised alarm not only among residents but also environmental advocates. Dr Anthony Turton, an environmental advisor for Project Blue, criticised the City for lacking effective protocols to identify health risks from contamination, further fuelling concerns among the public.
