She said she felt like like her life had been 'taken away' from her
A "helpless" mother-of-two became paralysed from the waist down minutes after telling her children she was having a bath before taking them to nursery. As she sat in the bath, 30-year-old Jessica Ennis, from Gelligaer in Wales, had no idea what had happened to her body.
“I felt completely numb when they told me – like my life had been taken away,” Jessica said. “I just want to be a mum again, I want to be a wife again, and I want to be Jess again," she added, remembering herself as an active member of her community in Gelligaer where she founded the local football club and organised weekly coaching sessions as club secretary before her symptoms began.
"Life couldn't have been more perfect. I run the local kids’ and men’s football teams in Gelligaer, I’d ran a half marathon, we travelled often in our motorhome, we were always out doing stuff as a family, and even looked after my three nieces often. While Jessica said she was often in “almost unbearable pain” she was living with it until shortly after her birthday in June when she suddenly became paralysed. “It was my 30th birthday party on June 17 and I'd had a rare good day where I was able to enjoy it," she remembered. "On the Monday I remember being really tired but got through the day. Then on the Tuesday the pain I was in was unbearable.
"I’m also stuttering and struggling to get my words out and have involuntary spasms in my right arm. I can no longer feed myself because I can’t use my hands without them shaking uncontrollably. I can’t help my children with anything. I’m incontinent at 30 years old. It’s a horrible condition and not something I’d ever thought would have happened to me. The worst part is the hyper-sensitivity meaning I can't bear being touched and all I want to do is hug my husband and my children.
