A patient who was declared dead by ambulance staff in the North East and woke up in the hospital hours later has died, police have confirmed.

The patient was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital by ambulance workers at the North East Ambulance Service last week.The paramedics had declared the patient dead earlier in the day but surprised staff when they suddenly woke up in the hospital. Durham Police confirmed on Monday that the woman, in her 50s, has now died, labelling her death as "unexpected".
