DONKIN — Jill Taylor's
From Halifax, the registered nurse is on long-term leave due to medical reasons. After suffering for more than four years with a serious intestinal system condition, ulcerative colitis Taylor was able to get a necessary surgery to reduce the chances of developing bowel cancer.
"At that time last year, my rent in my area of Halifax was getting foolish and finding a decent apartment at a decent price was getting beyond ridiculous so here in parts of Cape Breton, it's still somewhat sane." "I asked plainly why, is it geographically? And she said, 'yes.' That my health issues are still complicated enough that she could not give her best medical service if I was to remain in Cape Breton," said Taylor, who told her she's more than willing to travel for in-person appointments.
Along with learning that the doctor is retiring in August, Taylor was able to express her concern over losing the family practitioner at this stage of her recovery. With tens of thousands of people ahead of her on the need a family doctor registry, Taylor thinks it would take 5-7 years for her to get a doctor practicing in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.
She is concerned that other people might not realize they can push back against a doctor wanting to drop them from their patient list. They can request the Nova Scotia College of Physicians and Surgeons review the reasons the doctor gives for dropping them to see if they fall under their guidelines.
