The kayaker got back into the river and rescued the duo from the water near the tip of the island downriver of the dam.
Minutes later, Kent police and fire rescue crews arrived at the scene and met the kayaker on the island in the river, the release says. The child was showing signs of a near-drowning. A rescue boat reached the crews on the island and brought both the woman and child to shore about 7:25 p.m., according to the news release. The child was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital for treatment by paramedics. Neither the woman nor the child’s condition were released, though both were conscious at the time they were rescued, authorities said.
