Lancs Police are receiving on average five hoax calls a day

A Morecambe woman will go before court after allegedly making repeated unnecessary 999 calls and abusing call handlers.

The woman, who has not been named by Lancashire Constabulary, is accused of repeatedly swearing and threatening those receiving her calls and was arrested on Monday. She has since been charged with using the public communication network in an offensive manner and is due to appear at Preston Magistrates Court on December 28.

The force has now issued a warning that anyone deliberately blocking emergency lines without cause will face similar action. According to police figures, an average of 900 emergency calls are made each day with the figure rising significantly during busy periods such as bank holidays and New Year.Over the course of 2022, around 2,000 hoax calls were made - an average of more than five a day.

Chief Superintendent Karen Edwards, Divisional Commander for West Division, said: “Our control room staff work incredibly hard, taking calls and helping protect our communities. We need our emergency phone lines available for those who genuinely and urgently require police assistance’. “My message is clear - anyone thinking of wasting police time could find themselves at risk of criminal proceedings. We will be there to help those in genuine need of help, but if you are thinking of intentionally wasting police time then we will take appropriate action.”
