An optical computer built at Wits University could help make quantum computing more accessible in developing nations.
A team of physicists at Wits University have constructed an optical computer that uses light to complete calculations at quantum computer speeds. The research may help to make the power of quantum computing more accessible to people in developing nations.
The physicists linked the way light interacts with a digital display to the mathematical operations that a quantum computer performs. This allows for operations to be broken down to multiplication and addition and which are performed at the speed of light. However, the creation of this optical computer that uses light means that quantum computing operations could be made more accessible here in South Africa and other nations.
