About 400 teenagers swarmed the carnival Saturday in response to a call on social media to get a flash mob going, officials said. Teenagers ran through the parking lot and fought with each other “in an attempt to cause chaos and disrupt the event.'

Don Cifelli, of Orland Park, said he and his wife and their two children were at the carnival, sponsored by the Tinley Park Chamber of Commerce.

Cifelli said he did not know how many teens were on the carnival grounds, although police said it was about 400. “This one incident is unfortunate, but we responded promptly and no residents were hurt,” he said. “Our officers did an outstanding job.” “It was getting around sundown and some fights broke out, but not right where we were standing,” she said. “Police were quickly in there and trying to break things up.”

Tinley Park police had six officers assigned to the carnival, but as things started to get out of hand called for assistance from several agencies, said Tinley Park police Deputy Chief Larry Rafferty. Police said groups of teenagers began running through the parking lot where the carnival was set up and started fighting with each other “in an attempt to cause chaos and disrupt the event.”
