San Diego's rugby team has already locked up a No. 1 playoff seed. Sunday marks a final tuneup before the postseason.
The San Diego Legion enter Sunday’s regular-season finale against the rival Seattle Seawolves locked in as the No. 1 seed in the Major League Rugby Western Conference playoffs.Keeping that mark intact offers plenty of incentive for coach Danny Lee’s team on Sunday in a game that will not otherwise impact the team’s overall championship drive.“Obviously will be at the back of the mind, but one thing we’ve kept in front of us all season is what’s most important and that’s the next game,” Lee said.
Lee said he also expects to field a tweaked lineup on Sunday, seeing it as an opportunity to “mix and match a bit.” Each of the last six victories have come by double digits and the lone defeat of the season came to Houston back on March 5.All of this after the Legion went 8-8 and lost to Seattle in a playoff eliminator match last season, a finish which led to roughly a third of the roster to being turned over as Lee and executive general manager David Haigh looked to add some much-needed “physicality” to match speed and skill.
The Legion lead the 12-team MLR in average home attendance at over 6,800 per game. Sunday’s match is indicative of the holistic approach the club has taken to attracting and entertaining fans.
