Canada's SailGP team, with Dartmouth’s Tim Hornsby onboard, captured their first-ever victory of the international sailing regatta Sunday in New Zealand. - BOB MARTIN / SAILGPAfter hurricane-force winds damaged Canada’s catamaran sail at last month’s Sail Grand Prix in Australia, Phil Robertson and his crew were looking for a revival this weekend off the shores of New Zealand.

“It was a tricky old day,” Robertson, a New Zealander, said in a news release. “We didn’t really get any time to warm up, or even commission our new wing, so we were chucked in the deep end and we just hoped that everything worked and it seemed to go alright. We slowly improved during the day and came away with the bullet.”Following three Saturday races of the season’s penultimate regatta, Canada came into the final day of racing in second place.

Canada, in its first season in SailGP, reached the podium races in the season’s first two regattas but didn’t reach another final race until this weekend. Chester sailor Georgia Lewin-LaFrance was with the Canadian crew as a co-pilot/strategist for much of this season.
