The Celtics were East favorites on Wednesday morning. By evening, that had all changed.
It was understandable if Antetokounmpo was experiencing doubt. The Bucks, after a first-round exit, were starting to look a little stale. Not anymore.
They’re anything but stale after landing Lillard. While the Bucks have some questions, like any other team, they might also have the NBA’s best one-two punch in Antetokounmpo and Lillard plus Middleton and Lopez as great surrounding players. It’s way too early to know how the Celtics will match up against Milwaukee, but the clash of size versus size would be rare in today’s NBA.
It’s not too early, however, to begin thinking about the next domino to fall from this trade. Holiday doesn’t make much sense on the Trail Blazers as they rebuild around several young guards. Assuming Portland moves on from Holiday in another trade, a long list of teams should line up to bid for him. The 76ers and Heat would both make sense as suitors.
The Celtics were the Eastern Conference betting favorites Wednesday morning. Now the Bucks are. Milwaukee will need to figure out exactly how to maximize its updated roster, but the fit seems nearly ideal on paper, which should frighten the rest of the league.
