The Duchy of Cornwall says the Devon woodland is under threat from fire, disease and climate change.
The duchy said it aimed to regenerate and at least double the size of Wistman's by 2040A rare and ancient woodland on Dartmoor is to be regenerated and expanded, the Duchy of Cornwall has announced. It said the woodland, which contained very rare Atlantic mosses and lichen, was under threat from fire, disease and climate change.
David Cope, head of sustainability at the duchy, said the "incredibly special place" provides "a home for some very rare species, making this work extremely important for our goal of a net zero and nature-rich estate".The duchy said the woodland, which contains very rare Atlantic mosses and lichen, was under threat from fire, disease and climate change
The plans include encouraging natural oak and rowan regeneration, and supporting the lichen with "appropriate levels of cattle and pony grazing".Twenty-two acres of new woodland pasture would be created on the west side of the River Dart, opposite Wistman's Wood, near Princetown, with more to come on other duchy farms, they added.
"Reserves like this one will act as the battery packs powering nature recovery across the country," he said.

10 states, including Mass., plan to sue EPA over standards for residential wood-burning stovesAttorneys general from 10 states plan to sue the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, saying its failure to review and ensure emissions standards for residential wood-burning stoves has allowed the continued sale of appliances that unduly worsen pollution. They say that means programs that encourage people to trade in older stoves and other wood-burning appliances, such as forced-air furnaces, haven’t necessarily improved air quality. The EPA declined to comment. The states filed a 60-day notice of intent to sue Thursday. Alaska, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Vermont and Washington are involved in the action, along with the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency.
