That's not to be, with Variety confirming that Winning Time is canceled after Sunday season 2's finale aired on HBO. The publication also notes that the Winning Time additional scene, which focuses on Lakers owner Jerry Buss and daughter Jeanie , and shares what happens to the main characters, was not included in an initial version of the finale. On social media, series creator Max Borenstein confirmed the news.
Borenstein wrote: "Not the ending that we had in mind. But nothing but gratitude and love." Director Salli Richardson also shared her thoughts on Instagram, writing in part: "I am sure I will do many more hours of TV and hopefully many features in my future, but I can say that at this moment in time I am most proud of the work we did on this masterful show."
Why Winning Time Was Canceled There had been previous warning signs for the series. Jeff Pearlman, the author of the book on which the HBO show is based, expressed worry that Winning Time season 3 won't happen and urged fans to keep watching. The second installment debuted to 629,000 total viewers when counting Max and HBO broadcasts. Compared to the first season, 901,000 viewers watched the premiere episode. Ratings rose to 1.6 million for the finale in terms of same-day viewers.
There is an argument that Winning Time should have been allowed to continue, both because HBO, as a network, has the positive reputation of keeping many of its series going even if they're not huge in terms of viewership and awards. That approach helped to give space for The Wire, for example, which is now heralded as one of the best American dramas of the modern era.But on a more immediate level, the show had a very easy way of reinventing itself.
