Supervisor erected geofence around officer's house
A male Windsor police staff sergeant ordered a geofence erected around a female constable’s house to monitor her, according to a Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario case that was settled but is now among multiple complaints about the force to the Ontario Civilian Police Commission.
The officer was first approached by her staff sergeant in June 2015, according to the documents. GPS records showed she had spent more than eight hours at home during 12 shifts, including almost two hours during two stops on one shift. The next month, according to documents, the staff sergeant requested yet another explanation for an indeterminate stop at the officer’s partner’s house and a trip home for 24 minutes. The officer began to suspect the geofence.
She received the Medal of Bravery for rescuing a suicidal man in the frigid Detroit River in November 2011. Now, rumours about her bathroom habits “filtered through the ranks,” she wrote. A month later, the officer complained to the tribunal. A confidential settlement was reached in 2017.*Allowing the Office of the Independent Police Review Director, another provincial watchdog, to conduct an unauthorized search of another female officer’s police computer without a warrant. This was part of a gender discrimination complaint to the human rights tribunal that was dismissed in February because there was no evidence that the complaint was related to gender.
