Winde condemns Mossel Bay violence after two Mozambican nationals killed

The fatalities occurred during widespread civil unrest linked to community protests targeting undocumented migrants.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde says concerns regarding South Africa's immigration laws can never justify violence, following the killing of two Mozambican nationals in Mossel Bay over the weekend.

The killings occurred during widespread civil unrest linked to community protests targeting undocumented migrants. More than 50 informal dwellings were torched at the Asla Park informal settlement on Friday night, leaving hundreds of displaced foreign nationals stranded without shelter. Winde confirmed that the provincial cabinet and senior police management convened an urgent meeting on Wednesday to evaluate the security situation and coordinate an emergency response.

The premier emphasised that any grievances regarding immigration policy must be addressed exclusively through legal channels and processed by the relevant statutory authorities. Winde additionally called on the South African Police Service to significantly strengthen its crime intelligence gathering capabilities to pre-empt and prevent further xenophobic unrest.

"We have a constitutional democracy, we believe in the rule of law, and we cannot act illegally in this way. It is not who we are as South Africans; it does not fit in with Ubuntu. We must make sure that the rule of law prevails.

" The premier concluded that the provincial government will continue to work in close alignment with law enforcement agencies to ensure those responsible for the arson and murders are swiftly brought to justice.
