Top Republicans are calling the CBO report flat-out inaccurate, and McCarthy suggested the agency "double counted" some recipients already exempt from work requirements. At one point, McCarthy described their inclusion in a final deal as a "red line" for Republicans.
"They're the ones trying to come in and cut SNAP," she said. "They're trying to come and cut environmental protections." The legislation also includes new exemptions for veterans, people experiencing homelessness and people ages 18 to 24 who are aging out of the foster care system.
