Will Power wins 2022 IndyCar championship, Alex Palou wins Laguna Seca.

When Will Power won his first championship in 2014, it was the culmination of a six-year battle between his world-destroying speed and his own tendencies to squander that pace. He had to learn ovals the hard way, going from winless on ovals until his fourth season in the series to an Indianapolis 500 winner by 2018. When he finally put it all together to win that title, it seemed like the floodgates had finally opened.

They had not. Power became a mainstay at the front of every type of track the series ran, but Power consistently floated between second and fifth in the standings every year since. Until this year, where he flipped the narrative on its head. Now, he was the one more consistent than teammate Josef Newgarden. He was the one faster on ovals than Scott Dixon. He won just once, but he qualified well and floated near the podium in just about every race.

Power's battle for the title started from pole today, but it was two drivers that had been forced back in the field during qualifying that were his biggest problems today. 2021 champion Alex Palou was forced to start in the back half of the top ten after a grid penalty for an engine change, but he took the lead from Power during the day's second stint and never looked back en route to a dominant victory.

Power will get his chance to defend his championship next season. The full 2023 IndyCar schedule has not yet been revealed, but the season generally opens at the St. Petersburg street circuit in March.
