Will giant Joro spiders parachute their way into N.J. and other northern states?

These large critters have been exploding in some southern states during the past year, and experts say their webs can fly through the air.

This creepy-looking insect, which has bright yellow markings and long legs that can stretch across a human palm, is also known as a “parachuting spider” because it spins large wheel-shaped webs that can be lifted into the air by gusts of wind.

“Like the spotted lanternfly, it will get here because we brought it north,” she told NJ Advance Media. Last year, the Joro spider’s wide golden web took over yards, porches and power lines all across northern Georgia, unnerving some residents. The spider was also spotted in South Carolina, and bug experts had predicted it would spread throughout the Southeast.
