Will Dallas’ new rules for rental scooters prevent chaos this time? | Opinion

Lime scooters stood outside a warehouse in Dallas in 2020. Lime is one of the vendors that offers geofencing technology that will shut off scooters when riders misuse them.Well, they’re back. Electric scooters and bikes that Dallas suspended in 2020 overwill return in what is expected to be a more regulated environment in the next few weeks.

Scooters will only be functional from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. In theory, this will prevent the impaired driving accidents that became commonplace in neighborhoods such as Deep Ellum. In order for this to work, police or code enforcement officers need to get more involved. There must be zero tolerance for scooter companies that break the rule that sidewalks are for pedestrians and streets for scooter riders.

City Council members said they want to see scooters and e-bikes more evenly distributed across Dallas.
