What’s the college basketball national-championship-game bump, if you’re San Diego State? Does it kick open doors that forever change a program, reshaping expectations? Or is it an unforgettable but fleeting moment in time unless it fuels an express train routinely bound for the Sweet 16?, too. They’ll sell more tickets and merchandise. Some bandwagon donors and sponsors will hop aboard.
Dutcher is wired differently, though. It took his home-state Minnesota Gophers, a legacy opening since his father, Jim, roamed the sidelines there, to even catch his eye. Consider what he said Sunday, the day before the title game. “You never say never,” CBS Sports Network analyst Pete Gillen said. “He’s got a good niche. Could he go? Sure. But you don’t mess with happiness. You don’t mess with success. Might as well bask in the glory he has now.”
Peek at attendance. The Aztecs drew 12,261 per home game this season, university officials said. That would rank second in the Pac-12, behind only basketball-crazy Arizona .“Are they turning them away at Cal? At Stanford? At Oregon State?” Greenberg said.
