Worksop-based Wilko fell into administration earlier this month, putting 12,500 roles and more than 400 stores at risk

Shoppers and business experts have been left distraught by the likely bleak future of Nottinghamshire firm Wilko - as job losses and store closures loom. .

Mick Romanski, 78, from Carlton said he regularly shops at Wilko with his wife and was frustrated by what he saw as a lack of support for employees. "I think the staff have been failed by the bosses of the company and by our government. It is a sad thing to have all these people waiting to see if they will have a job, they've been let down.

"I go there for gardening bits but they have had trouble stocking shelves recently - which I thought was just in Clifton but seems to have been everywhere. I don't think B&M and that sort of store have helped either as they're probably a bit cheaper." Wilko has long been one of Nottinghamshire's most successful and recognisable firms, being measured the fourth largest company in the county last year. The business was founded in Leicester in 1930 by James Kemsey Wilkinson and remained privately owned by the family for nearly 100 years before being placed into administration by directors.

"There is a Nottinghamshire specific impact separate to the wider shops, with the head office and distribution in Worksop, to the tune of around 1,800 jobs.
