🥊 Used fake ID to turn pro 🥊 Younger world champion than Mike Tyson 🥊 Fifth king of ‘Four Kings’ era Boxing legend Wilfred Benitez's incredible story
Wilfred Benitez was fifth king of ‘Four Kings’ era, used fake ID to turn pro and was younger than Mike Tyson when he became a world champion“Sometimes I train good, sometimes I don’t train at all,” the great Wilfred Benitez, widely recognised as the Fifth King, once said. “My father would say, ‘Train’. I would say, ‘No’. But if I train, then I am the best boxer in the world.”
In defeat – Benitez was stopped with six seconds remaining of the 15th round – he had given the naturally bigger Leonard what then represented his biggest test, and further vindicated the prophesy made by his father Gregorio Snr at his birth in New York when he declared that his son would grow up to fight.
When three successive victories followed his first defeat, Benitez challenged Maurice Hope for the WBC light middleweight title and, producing what continues to be recognised as one of the most memorable finishes ever seen in a boxing ring when landing an overhand right, what his father described as “Wilfred’s finest hour” unfolded.
After the heavy-handed Hearns earned a majority decision over 15 rounds, Benitez outpointed Tony Cerda and was then bullied by the unheralded Mustafa Hamsho over 12. Another victory, over Stacy McSwain, followed but, spending an increased amount of time taking punishment on the ropes, his fourth ever defeat, and third in five fights, then came in under two rounds against a fighter so recently beaten by Duran.
