Arizona State's progress took a quantum leap forward Saturday, holding off a last Washington push and securing a 45-38 win.
It wasn't enough that Shaun Aguano had to unexpectedly take over the reins of the ASU football program after Herm Edwards parted ways with the program. He has to do so starting with three consecutive games against nationally ranked foes. That progress took a quantum leap forward Saturday afternoon at Sun Devil Stadium, as
ASU went toe-to-toe with No. 21 Washington before holding off a last Huskies push and securing a 45-38 winHere are some takeaways from ASU's first Pac-12 win of the season, the first win under Aguano, and its first win against a ranked team since beating then-No. 20 UCLA 42-23 at the Rose Bowl last Oct. 2. Arizona State improved to 2-4, 1-2 in the conference; UCLA dropped to 4-2, 1-2.
It's been a long time since ASU has needed to press a backup quarterback into service. When Jayden Daniels came to ASU in 2019 the starting job was his, and the only question was who would be the backup. Trenton Bourguet was that guy for the past two years, but the only action he saw came in mop-up duty.
When Emory Jones transferred to ASU over the summer he won the No. 1 job, and once again the only question at the position was who would serve as understudy. When then-head coach Herm Edwards announced Jones as the starter two weeks before the season started, he was asked about the backup and chose not to name one.
Equally impressive was how cool Bourguet looked in the pocket. At just 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds, the redshirt junior out of Tucson Marana High School simply did not get rattled, even as Washington's offense kept the pressure on ASU.
