The Sacramento County Corner's office announced that Lori McClintock, the wife of U.S. Rep. Tom McClintock, died as a result to 'adverse effects' caused from ingesting white mulberry leaf.
Consumers of herbal supplements are being urged to double check what items they are putting into their body.
White mulberry leaf is a supplement often used as an appetite control remedy. It is also used to treat flu-like symptoms and is sold to the public as an extract or in pills. "They're not so highly regulated like medications are and so what you're actually getting may not do what it's touted to do because they don't have to have the scientific rigor medications do they're treated as food," senior dietician at UCLA medical center Dr. Dana Hunnes told CBSLA Reporter Joy Benedict."To be quite honest too many people take supplements without the recommendation of their doctors or dieticians.
