Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu has revealed to News24 that he's going to axe 24 members serving on the two embattled water boards to constitute an entirely new water structure. | soyiso_maliti

Minister of Water and Sanitation Senzo Mchunu seen during the 55th Hybrid National Conference at the Durban Exhibition Centre.Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu says two water boards will be merged into one by the end of July. The name of KwaZulu-Natal's largest river, uThukela River, will feature in the reconfigured board's new name.

The proposed name of the new structure is the Umgeni-uThukela Water Board and it is envisaged that it will usher in a new era in the way in which water is delivered in KwaZulu-Natal."It will be done by the end of July. We will have a new board by then. We haven't interviewed people, but the processes are on. We don't know when they are advertising exactly, but they have received a directive from us to advertise for the new board under a new name," Mchunu said.

Quizzed on the financial implications of the mega decision, he said:"One of the reasons we're taking this route is exactly on the economies of scale in relation to [having] two boards instead of one. What you're asking is going to come in terms of what liabilities [each] of these boards are coming with and their assets."Pushed on whether unions were approached, he said there were wide consultations and that"there are no problems".

Since Jagersfontein, South Africa Changes Mine Dam RulesSince Jagersfontein, South Africa Changes Mine Dam RulesSouth Africa's Department of Water and Sanitation has established a database on which mining houses need to register tailing dams (used to store water and waste from mines) and Dams with Safety Risk. Tailing dams are described as those used to store water and waste from mines, while Dams with Safety Risk are those structures with a minimum height of five metres and are able to store more than fifty thousand cubic metres of water or water containing substance. The new requirements for mines arose after the disaster at Jagersfontein in the Free State province on September 11, 2022 in which residents woke to a devastating mudslide as a wall of a dam, part of a disused diamond mine once owned by global mining giant De Beers, collapsed. Many people were left homeless by the sludge and one person died. Deputy President Paul Mashatile is visiting Jagersfontein to discuss the rehousing of residents, nearly eight months after the event.
