Widow of Mpumalanga chief and rhino poaching suspect killed in hail of bullets

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, Charlene Felicity Mathews and two men were shot at Mnisi’s home at around 1:10 am on Tuesday. Mathews died on the scene, but the two men sustained injuries and were sent to hospital.

“Mnisi’s killers are still at large and have not been found yet,” Mohlala added. The chief and his driver were waiting for assistance on the road to the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport on March 26 when a group of about five heavily armed men, wearing balaclavas and gloves, arrived in a BMW X5. They then alighted from the vehicle carrying high-calibre rifles and went straight to the passenger side where Mnisi sat.

Mnisi was charged alongside notorious rhino poaching kingpin, the late Petros Sydney Mabuza , aka Mshengu, who was assassinated at a shopping mall in Hazyview in 2021.
