Good news for Chicagoans: “Wicked,” the ever-popular retelling of “The Wizard of Oz,” will return for a 10-week run at the Nederlander Theatre beginning later this month.

Lissa deGuzman as Elphaba and Jennafer Newberry as Glinda in the National Tour of"Wicked."

Over the years, she has seen “Wicked” several more times on Broadway when friends have appeared in the cast. “I’ve always loved the show and always waited and hoped for the opportunity to present itself for me to be able to join the cast and be a part of this incredible, almost 20-year legacy,” said Newberry. For deGuzman, the soundtrack was her entry point; her brother saw “Wicked” early in its Broadway run and told her to listen to the music.

This approach allowed the actors to craft their own version of the onstage relationship between Elphaba and Glinda, which is at the heart of the show. Although Newberry previously had been the understudy for Glinda, she was able to “leave behind everything from before … and find it all again” with deGuzman, she recalled. “We really got to find that foundation and find our specific story, so it’s been super special,” added deGuzman, “and it has built a lifelong friendship in real life as well.

Newberry noted that the story is “nuanced and layered,” with themes that range “from love and friendship and acceptance to the biases that we hold, to judging people for how they look or how they act, for being different.” She also pointed to Elphaba’s activism and quest for justice as an important thread.
