British convenience food is the worst of food
I am increasingly of the opinion that supermarket sandwiches should be done away with entirely. Take Marks & Spencer’s new “posh” egg mayonnaise and watercress, “double filled” creation. It is £6. That’s three sausage rolls from Greggs with change for a Freddo or two. No wonder social media erupted in dismay when the product hit shelves: “This country is finished”, said one.. But the whole point of a convenience range in a grocery shop is accessibility, efficiency, affordability.
Why the higher fee? The “posh” version contains 166g of filling compared to the standard 115g, according to M&S. And so consumers are being asked to pay more than twice the price for an additional 41g of protein.
It isn’t just M&S either. All the British retailers are at it, churning out pre-packaged sandwiches of mindless creation, each more bamboozling than the last. And let’s be clear: there is nothing “posh” about egg mayonnaise. This is marketing gone rogue, preying on our lack of time and energy, serving only to degenerate what was once a fine idea: a cheap, simple sandwich to aid the busy and professional.
And so I say again: should we not rethink our supermarket sandwiches? Bring pasta in Tupperware or, if money is less of an object, visit an independent seller which uses better produce and makes each sandwich fresh to order. For all Britain’s progress when it comes to eating, a major and serious foible remains: packaged sandwiches. M&S has come away with egg on its face and it is far from alone.
